On Thursday, January 24th, I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Mrs. Lilian Barton-Sartorius, daughter of Monsieur Anthony Barton at a wonderful tasting featuring thirteen vintages from Château Langoa-Barton & Château Léoville-Barton. My favorite wine of the evening was the very seductive and elegant 1996 Château Langoa-Barton. It was truly a textbook study in terroir and how to work with nature rather than against it. The lasting and most important take away from this event was the beauty both properties captured and conveyed individually and collectively. This seamless level of perfection is no easy feat but, the history and commitment the Barton family has established is evident in the wines they produce.
The evening started with flutes of Krug followed by a new property acquired by the Bartons in Moulis-en-Médoc which turned out to be a great full bodied blend bursting with balanced fruit and tannins. Up next was what we all had come to witness and taste – – 13 vintages of Langoa & Léoville. Organized by Panos Kakaviatos with the help of Maria E. Denton, Moet Hennessy Portfolio Manager, the set-up and orchestration was as perfect as the wine which made for a very enjoyable evening.
